Chelsea must offer future ambition to attract players – Hiddink

Chelsea’s interim coach Guus Hiddink believes that the club can still attract top players to Stamford Bridge even if they don’t have Champions League football.

The Blues poor form at the start of the campaign has left them languishing in the bottom half of the table and the possibility of playing in Europe next season is looking unlikely.

However, the Dutch coach still feels that the west London side can still attract top players if they are willing to show that they have the ambition to return to their former glory.

“The club must also offer the ambition, even when you don’t play in the Champions League next year,” the 69-year-old is quoted as saying via the Evening Standard. “It’s difficult, but if a club with a big status can offer ambition for the future, then you can still be attractive to players.”

The possibility of playing in the Champions Leauge next term isn’t completely out of reach for Chelsea as they are still in the elite European competition which returns next week when they face French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Laurent Blanc’s men knocked out the Blues at this stage last season and Hiddink will be eager to avoid a similar situation again. The experienced coach has improved Chelsea considerably since he returned to the club in December and they remain unbeaten in all competitions since then.

Individuals like Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa now appear to be back to their best and he will be looking to continue that form on Saturday when they face Newcastle United.
