Four years ago this very month, Chelsea were on a magical journey.
Despite a poor Premier League season, Chelsea were on a roll in the Champions League and after knocking out Barcelona in the semi-final, Chelsea went on to beat Bayern Munich, in a penalty shoot-out, on their home turf.
It was a night none of us will ever forget, I can still recall waking up at 04:00 in the morning with a banging headache wondering what had happened only to break out in a broad smile when I remember the sight of Didier Drogba strolling up and slotting that ball nonchalantly past Manuel Neuer.
That night, without a doubt, was Roberto Di Matteo`s finest hour as a manager. Thrust into the limelight as a caretaker, Di Matteo took to the job like a fish to water, although being accepted by the supporters and players helped enormously.
I`m sure, like me, you can remember a beaming Di Matteo climbing the steps in the Allianz Arena to collect his medal, seeing Roman Abramovich stood in front of him, he bellowed out loud,
"I did it, I won it"
with Roman smiling in an approving manner.
But that dream died, Di Matteo was given the job on a permanent basis but didn`t last long.
Today, the Birmingham Mail is running with the suggestion that Di Matteo has emerged as the favourite to take over the vacant managerial role at Aston Villa. Taking the job would be a huge challenge, trying to revive a fallen giant, but then again Roberto`s good at huge challenges, just ask Barcelona and Bayern Munich!
