Michael Owen likens Diego Costa’s omission from Spain’s latest Euro squad to Paul Gascoigne axe in ’98

Costa has been ignored for the upcoming European Championships by Spain boss Vicente del Bosque due to fitness concerns, with Aritz Aduriz making it into the squad as the focal attacking point after a wonderful campaign.
mission from Spain‘s Euro 2016 squad is similar to when Glenn Hoddle chose not to select Paul Gascoigne for the 1998 World Cup.

Chelsea forward Costa finished the season with just 12 goals in the Premier League, while 35-year-old Aduriz scored 20 in La Liga and 36 in all competitions.

Owen, who shot to stardom in 1998 in France, believes that Costa’s omission is similar to that of Gascoigne’s 18 years ago, when Hoddle decided to leave the English icon at home

“I suppose if you know you’re not going to be starting them, do you want them in the squad potentially disrupting the harmony in the camp?” the BT pundit told the Mirror. “It’s similar to Gazza in ‘98. Hoddle wanted to start with Scholes and wasn’t sure about having Paul in the squad if he wasn’t playing so he overlooked him.

“We’ve seen sulky players in the France squad who have caused an implosion and derailed any chances of success so I can understand the philosophy.”

Throughout the 1990s, Gascoigne – or Gazza as he was and has been affectionately known – was England’s big-name and big-game star. In the 1990 World Cup, the midfielder was phenomenal, and his tears on the pitch after being booked in the semi-final, meaning he’d miss the final, are iconic.

He was sublime at Euro 96 too, scoring one of England’s most famous goals against Scotland, but just two years later he was left out by Hoddle, much to the derision of supporters across the land.

Costa, despite having a poor first half of the season, was fantastic in the final five months for Chelsea, and may count himself unlucky not to have made the final squad.
