Ray Parlour: I am “amazed” Chelsea haven’t offered Guus Hiddink permanent job

Ray Parlour has said that he is “amazed” Chelsea have not offered Guus Hiddink the managerial job permanently at the club.

The Blues parted ways with Jose Mourinho back in December and brought in Hiddink for the second time in recent years to steady the ship until the end of the season.

However, the Dutch tactician has done more than just that and Chelsea are remarkably unbeaten since he took charge, winning six of their 11 Premier League games.

Chelsea have climbed up to eighth in the table as a result and, while they were looking to avoid relegation when he first took charge, they are now just eight points off the Champions League places.

Despite Hiddink working his magic, there are strong suggestions Italy’s current manager Antonio Conte will move to Stamford Bridge in the summer – a move Parlour cannot seem to take in easily.

“I am amazed,” Parlour told talkSPORT. “Why not? He is such an experienced manager and he would probably really look forward to trying to win the Premier League [next season].
.

“Conte looks like he is getting the job but everybody is playing well under Hiddink. He has gone back to basics, everybody is smiling and everybody is playing well – why not carry it on for next season?

“He has got a good coaching staff around him and he can have a real go at trying to win the Premier League back.”

A number of pundits have criticised Chelsea’s decision not to appoint Hiddink permanently, but there is also the factor that the former Netherlands boss is now 69 and looking to ease his career down.

Conte may be the ideal solution in the long term – the Lecce-born coach is just 46 – and it seems almost a formality that he will become Chelsea’s next long-term boss.
