West Ham see off competition from Arsenal to sign Chelsea teenager Domingos Quina

West Ham have beaten off competition from Arsenal to sign Chelsea teenager Domingos Quina.

The highly-rated, 16-year-old midfielder will sign after being persuaded that he had a better chance of progressing through to the first team in West Ham's set-up.

Tottenham, Liverpool and both Manchester clubs had also shown interest in Quina, who turned down the chance to stay at Chelsea as he believed his chances would be limited.

Born in Guinea Bissau, Quina was brought up in Portugal and left Benfica for Chelsea as a 13-year-old.

A skilful attacking midfielder, Quina is regarded as one of Portugal's best prospects, has starred for their Under 17s and is tipped to become a regular full international in the future.

The move represents a coup for West Ham as their reputation for developing young players has played a major part in the teenager's decision.

The news follows the Hammers' announcement on Friday that they have completed the signing of Valencia youngster Toni Martinez.

The teenage striker could cost as much as £2.4million, depending on his success with the club, and will formally join West Ham on July 1.

Valencia have given Martinez permission to train with his new team-mates until that date.
