In a short space of time, Metheus has grown from being a fringe player to one of the first names in the squad at his current club Sporting. The 20-year old has already shown signs of great maturity and is the subject of this scout report.
With a number of rumors linking him to EPL club Manchester United, we take a closer look at Matheus Pereira’s playing style, weaknesses and future prospects as a professional footballer.
Born in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Matheus like every other kid in his country started to play with a football when he was a child.
He moved to Portugal at the age of 12 and instantly made himself a name in the domestic circuit. He started his career as a professional footballer soon after as a part of the Trafaria side in Lisbon.
He has since slowly worked his way up the ladder and made his first appearance for the U-19 side of the club in a crunch game. His performances have also given him a chance in the B side but his progress has been more than just impressive.
He was a part of the B side at the start of the season but his exploits in the junior side saw him earn his first cap for the senior side in this season’s encounter against Besiktas. He has not looked back ever since and has cemented a place in the first team constantly.
A utility player who can play in many positions, Metheus is a dynamic operator who loves to play on the wings and influence games from the flanks.
Though he is not an out-right attacker, Matheus has been influential in his team’s goal-scoring form by contributing with 4 goals and 2 assists in just 6 games in the middle of a red-hot spell of form this season.
His finishing ability has been evident for all to see but what makes Matheus an out-standing player already is his vision. Un-selfish at most of the times, the 20-year old has the knack of picking the right pass more often than not and seeing him play is a joy for any manager.
His ability to pick defense-breaking passes along with his eye for goal make him one of the hottest prospects in Europe this summer.
Like most youngsters who are in a building stage, Matheus does not have an alarming presence during set-pieces and is a liability in the air.
He is not a strong player who loves to fight for the ball in the air but is someone who wants the ball at his feet which is not always the case in the best leagues around Europe.
At times, he is also criticized for the his lack of defensive discipline.
In a crunch game against Besiktas, Matheus lost his place in the starting XI and was replaced with Joao Mario only because he works harder in defense. This is something the young mind of the winger should and get accustomed to against top-class opponents.
Being dubbed as the next Cristiano Ronaldo is not an easy thing for any youngster so Matheus will have to keep his feet grounded and work towards justifying those comparisons.
At present, Sporting’s squad has a set of four wingers to start of the season: Mané, Gelson Martins, Bryan Ruiz and Carrillo.
This will see Matheus fight for his place week-in and week-out. While the competition is healthy, it can always drive players away from clubs due to lack of playing time.
The returns from the 20-year old in his limited appearances this season will not go un-noticed as a number of top European clubs including the likes of Manchester United are reportedly scouting for him.
But at just 20, Matheus still has plenty to learn about the game and if he can live up to his potential, he may well make a name for himself alongside the best in the business in Europe.
