The Blues are ready to enter in race for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario.
Few days ago Daily Star reported that Manchester United were closing in on a £45m deal for the Portuguese star.
Man United chiefs have held a series of talks with Mario and his representatives and are confident of striking a deal.
The Red Devils are willing to meet Mario’s £45m release clause and hand him a long-term deal worth around £140,000-a-week.
But, CalcioMercato reports The Blues have also held discussions with player’s new agents.
Incoming Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has reportedly been promised a £150m transfer chest by Roman Abramovich to refurbish the squad.
Italian star has been linked with a host of midfielders including Roma duet Radja Nainggolan and Miralem Pjanic.
Ligue 1 champions Paris St-Germain and La Liga giants Atletico Madrid also want the midfielder.
Mario, who has earned eight caps for Portugal, netted seven goals in 45 games for Sporting Lisbon this term.
The midfielder’s great control, accurate delivery and faultless decision-making ensures it’s almost improbable for the opposition to prise the ball away from him.
