Thibaut Courtois: Being out injured was a “strange” feeling for me

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has opened up on the injury that kept him out for the majority of the season which was a “strange” sensation for him.

The 23-year-old picked up a knee injury at the beginning of the campaign and was subsequently out for three months.

The Blues lost five Premier League games whilst he was absent, but he has managed to keep four clean sheets in England’s top flight since he returned, making 25 saves during those 12 appearances.

For the Belgium international, though, that period on the sidelines is not one that he look back on too fondly.

“It was strange for me,” Courtois told the Telegraph. ““When you get injured for a long time it’s not nice because you are out of the team and not involved anymore.

“Sometimes you just go to watch training to be with the players a bit and have the feeling of being part of the group. When it’s not going well, you want to help.”

Courtois has been at Chelsea since 2011 but he was sent out on loan to Atletico Madrid for three seasons, where he won La Liga, the Europa League and the Copa del Rey.

This weekend he will be looking to extend Chelsea’s unbeaten run in the Premier League under the guidance of Guus Hiddink, which stretches back to December 26th.

The Blues travel to St. Mary’s stadium to face an impressive Southampton side, who are unbeaten in their last six league games and haven’t conceded a single goal in that time.

Earlier this season Ronald Koeman managed to beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in a result which came in the midst of the Blues’ downfall under former manager Jose Mourinho.
