Conte’s Chelsea appointment delayed over backroom staff, reckons Ray Wilkins

Former Chelsea captain Ray Wilkins has said that he feels that the reason that Chelsea haven’t announced the appointment of Antonio Conte yet is possibly because of issues regarding backroom staff.

Since Jose Mourinho was fired by the club in December there have been a whole host of names linked with the post but now the favourite seems to be Conte, who has already announced he will leave his job with the Italian national team after the Euros.

Despite the Italian being heavily linked to the post for a number of weeks, and the recent announcement regarding his job with Italy there has been nothing from Chelsea, even though they are now out of the FA Cup and Champions League.

Wilkins, who both played for the club and worked as part of the coaching staff, and he said he thinks the problem is because Conte wants to bring in so many new members of staff.

Wilkins pointed out to Sky Sports some of the existing members of staff and said that he would be worried if they were to go.

“I believe there are a number of people that he wants to bring with him. His two brothers – one of his advisers is his brother, one scout that watches the away teams play is his brother – plus he wants to bring in two fitness coaches, and two coaches [Angelo Alessio and Massimo Carrera].

“So, you are going to lose Steve Holland, you are going to lose Eddie Newton, you are going to lose [fitness coach] Chris Jones, all fantastic people at Stamford Bridge who know what Chelsea is all about.

“That is probably why Chelsea have not quite announced that is going to be the situation, because they have got a lot of thinking to do.”

Some reports have suggested that Holland will be kept on but there hasn’t been any mention of the other members of staff.

Chelsea fans will be concerned about potentially losing those who have a connection to the club, as Wilkins points out, and it’ll certainly be interesting to see whether or not Conte’s backroom staff consists of those mentioned.
