Thibaut Courtois explains why he picked up back pass during Norwich 1 – Chelsea 2

There was a curious incident during the first half of Chelsea’s win over Norwich on Tuesday night that had the home supporters pretty irate.

Chelsea bagged their third Premier League win in succession to move up to eighth. Kenedy opened the scoring after 39 seconds and Diego Costa secured victory with what looked like an offside goal just before half-time.

Nathan Redmond halved the deficit for Norwich in the second half but the Canaries still fell to another defeat.

With the score at 1-0 to Chelsea in the 37th minute, Gary Cahill was under pressure in the right back position and passed back to Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgian held the ball at his feet for a couple of seconds before picking it up and throwing it to Kenedy.

Cue calls from the Norwich crowd that they should have been awarded an indirect free-kick in the penalty area as Courtois had picked up the ball.

Referee Lee Mason saw nothing wrong with Courtois’ action and after the game, the Belgian keeper suggested that the Azpilicueta back pass had touched Cameron Jerome, that is why he picked the ball up.
