Guus Hiddink reveals Willian was devastated to miss the game against Aston Villa

Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink has revealed that Willian was devastated to miss last weekend’s game against Aston Villa.

Willian has been the club’s best player in a very disappointing season and he has drawn plenty of praise for the way he has consistently performed despite the rest of the team struggling.

However the 27-year-old was left out of the game against Villa because he arrived back from international duty late and the Brazilian playmaker also had a minor injury.

Despite this, Hiddink has revealed at his pre-match press conference that Willian was absolutely devastated to miss the match.

“Willian came back from Brazil and he was devastated not just because of the match but because of his small injury and he invested in the dirty work and is very responsible defensively,” said the Dutchman.

“I mention him but there are more and that is what progress I think the team have made

That sort of determination to play every game is likely to impress incoming manager Antonio Conte, who reportedly met with players this week as he prepares to take over at Chelsea in the summer.

It’s currently unclear who will be his key players but many expect Willian to be vital because of his work-rate and his performances this season.

The Brazilian’s contract is due to expire in 2018 and many fans want him to be offered a new deal sooner rather than later.

Of course that decision will now have to be made by Conte, even though his title is head coach rather than manager.
