At the start of the 2015 / 2016, and as the reigning Premier League title holders, the Chelsea support expected Jose Mourinho to continue to harvest silverware.
As we now know we were all in for a rude awakening, our defence of the title never really got going, Mourinho cleared his desk in December, Guus Hiddink came in and steered us away from the drop-zone to finish tenth in the Premier League.
Any hopes of silverware were dashed by Stoke (League Cup), Everton (FA Cup) and Paris Saint-Germain (Champions League).
Disappointing is perhaps too mild a word for last season!
However, there`s renewed optimism in the air as the 2016 / 2017 season approaches with the current Italian national coach Antonio Conte set to take over as our new head-coach.
Yes there`s a huge amount of work to be done, players need to be moved on whilst some, to put it mildly, better ones need bringing in.
It`s generally accepted that the coming season is one of the most important seasons in our history. For the first time since Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea Football Club lock, stock and barrel there is no European football to look for, we`re all perfectly aware that a second season without European football could herald the end of an era, a slide back into permanent mid-table obscurity.
Therefore it comes as no surprise to us, at Vital Chelsea, that it is being reported by the Daily Mail that the club have given Antonio Conte the minimum task of finishing in the top-four this coming season.
It`s probably fair to say that a top-four finish, in the Premier League, is far more important than bringing the FA or League Cup back to Stamford Bridge, as one Louis van Gaal found out at Old Trafford last season.
