New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is still hoping to make defensive signings despite John Terry’s new deal.
The experienced captain and Chelsea agreed a one-year deal extension yesterday.
However, Italy manager is believed to have told the captain he will be further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge with starts more of a rarity.
And as The Times suggests, Antonio Conte is desperate to land first-choice defensive target Leonardo Bonucci.
Juventus star defender signed a new contract himself only last summer with the 2015 Champions League runner-ups.
The Italian defender has four seasons left on his deal and could take some persuading to join his ex-manager in West London.
Conte has coached the experienced defender at the club and international level for Juventus and Italy.
And the manager has picked Bonucci in his preliminary squad for Euro 2016.
But, Bonucci is clearly reluctant to call time on Juventus, having now spent six seasons at the Serie A giants.
Chelsea’s defensive weaknesses were certainly shown this term, as they allowed 53 Premier League goals and lost 12 matches on the back of their title-winning season.
And Terry remained an essential part of the squad amid the confusion, however with Kurt Zouma ruled out long-term with a knee injury too, Italian manager hopes he can lure Bonucci away from the Serie A.
