Werder Bremen‘s on-loan defender Papy Djilobodji has been banned for three matches after he was spotted performing a throat-slitting gesture towards an opposition player in the Bundesliga.
Djilobodji is on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea after his strange move to Stamford Bridge ended in failure after just a few months.
The central defender joined the German side in January from the Blues but actions like his latest may well mean that they could turn their backs on him when the chance to sign him in the summer arrives.
Reports from BBC Sport today claim that the defender – who made one appearance for Chelsea – has been banned for three matches after he was spotted making a throat-slitting gesture to Mainz winger Pablo de Blasis.
The referee did not spot the incident at the time but German football officials have since reviewed the footage and have punished the on-loan defender accordingly.
They have appealed the decision to ban him for three matches as Werder are currently fighting against relegation and need as many players available as possible for the run-in in order to survive.
“We maintain that the ruling of a three-match ban is unjustifiable,” Bremen chief executive Thomas Eichin said.
Djilobodji has made nine appearances in the Bundesliga for Werder so far this season and scored one goal. He’s been quite impressive and important at the back also, as he’s won 28 out of 42 (68% success) of his headed duels, so he’ll be a big miss over the next three matches should the ban be upheld.
